Safe Sleep/ Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Reduction Policy

The State of North Carolina requires that child care facilities adopt and post a Safe Sleep and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Reduction Policy. The following statements describe our policy at Small Miracles.------------------------ Any one working in the infant room, or who may potentially work in this room, will receive training on our Infant / Toddler Safe Sleep Policy.--------------- Infants 12 months and younger will always be placed on their backs to sleep, unless there is a signed sleep position medical waiver on file. In that case, a notice will be posted on the infant’s crib.--------------- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies are placed on their back to sleep, but when babies can easily turn over from the back to the stomach, they can be allowed to adopt whatever position they prefer for sleep. A note will be placed in the child’s file stating when the child is able to roll over to their side or back. A similar note will be posted over the child’s crib. The parent will also be notified verbally.--------------- We will follow this recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics. However we can further discuss with parents how to address circumstances when the baby turns onto their stomach or side.--------------- Sleeping infants will be checked periodically by us. We will be especially alert to monitoring a sleeping infant during the first weeks the infant is in child care.--------------- Room temperature will be kept between 68-72 degrees F. A thermometer is to be kept in the room to monitor the temperature at all times.--------------- Infants heads will not be covered with blankets or bedding.--------------- No loose bedding, pillows, bumper pads, etc. will be used in cribs. We will tuck any infant blankets in at the foot of the crib and along the sides of the crib mattress.--------------- Toys and stuffed animals will be removed from the crib when the infant is sleeping.--------------- Only one infant will be in a crib at a time, unless we are evacuating infants in an emergency.--------------- No smoking is permitted in the infant room or in any area adjacent to the infant room.--------------- All parents of infants cared for in the infant room will receive a written copy of our Safe Sleep Policy at the time of enrollment.--------------- No child will sleep in a swing, bouncy seat, car seat, etc. Children are to be placed immediately in their crib when they go to sleep.--------------- Parents must read and sign a copy of this policy. The copy will be placed in the child’s file.
